Information Gain: Your SEO Secret Weapon 🚀

Information gain measures how much new, useful content your page adds compared to what’s already online. Imagine building a puzzle: each unique piece you contribute makes the picture more complete.

Why Information Gain is Important for Organic Rank

  1. It rewards depth of content

    • Search engines want to surface pages that best satisfy a user’s query.

    • By covering topics more thoroughly—and adding insights others miss—you deliver higher information gain, which signals real value.

  2. Helps you stand out from the crowd

    • If your competitors all say the same five things, and you add two new fresh examples - you’ve boosted your information gain.

    • That extra detail can set your page apart in both search results and click‐throughs.

  3. Guides future content planning

    • Focusing on terms and subtopics that yield the biggest information gain helps you prioritize which sections to write or expand.

    • Over time, this targeted approach builds topical authority, making it easier to rank for new keywords.

Real-World Examples

  • SEO: Top “on-page SEO” guides mention title tags and meta descriptions. What if you shared A/B test results showing a 30% traffic lift after updating ten headings over 30 days?

  2. Answer any follow-up prompts

  3. Review & implement the suggestions you agree with

  4. Dive deeper by asking the GPT more questions about your results, be sure to be specific with your questions

Always apply your own judgement when using AI—recommendations can have some erroneous ideas!

A Peek at My Results

I ran my own test to share with you.

The initial result shows me a semantic gap evaluation and right away I see I am missing entity relationships.

What are entities?

These are commonly known people, places, or things. Some people call them nouns - but I am not going to over complicate it or start a war about it - they are a “thing” that is well known. These are the core to good SEO these days - I will dive into that more in the coming newsletters.

Back to the missing entity relationships!

If I am writing an article on 911 operators - I should be talking APCO, NENA and IAED. These are all major organizations that support 911 operators.

I currently do not talk about those entities at all. The GPT properly recognized this and now I know to go and add those in to my article.

Then you can even ask more questions based on the results.

For example, I was not clear on what “search intent layers” are from the chart above.

So I prompted it to clarify it for me.

Now I can see I have good coverage of informational content, but am lacking in other types - or “search intent layers” as the GPT calls them.

It also provides some great examples for me to consider adding. A good article will cover all of these types of content layers. Now I know I need to add all of these elements to my content.

The prompt will also deliver a recommended outline for your article. You can expand on this as well with more prompting.

Remember, this is not only for your own website! Go ahead and do competitor websites too. Then you will have a great overview of how you can use information gain to outrank them!
